Evolutionary(진화적인) liguists(언어학자) believe they have made a "significant breakthrough(돌파구)" regarding(~에관하여) the origin of Indo-European languages, including English and Sanskrit.

The linguists say an ancient predecessor(전임자) may have been spoken more than 8,100 years ago.

The researchers are from the Max Planck Institute(연구소) for Evolutionary Anthropology(진화 인류학) in Germany.

Their study may resolve(해결하다) a 200-year-old dispute over(~에 대한 논란) where the ancestor of English came from.

One school of thought(학파) posits(사실로 상정하다) Englist has its roots in the Pontic-Caspian Steppe on the northern shore(해안가) of the Black Sea 6,000 years ago.

A competing theory is that English originated from Anatolia (much of present-day Turkey) 9,000 year ago.

 

Indo-European languges are spoken by nearly half of the world's population.

The most commonly-spoken members of this family are English, Hindi(힌디어), Urdu(우르두어), Spanish, Bengali(벵골어), French, Russian, Portuguese and Punjabi(펀자브어)

Each of these have over 100 million native speakers.

More than 80 languge specialists created a huge databank of core vocaburary from 161 Indo-European languges.

The study included 52 ancient and historical languges.

Study co-author and Associate-Professor(부교수) Russell Gray said : "Ancient DNA and [evolutionary languge analysis] combine to suggest that the resolution(해결) to the 200-year-old Indo-European enigma(수수께끼) lies in a hybrid of the [Steppe and Anatolia] hypotheses."
